Cool Season Mites: How to prevent pests that aren’t so cool

Resources: Seasonal Tree Care

The summer season is coming to an end and with that comes the start of fall. Many people prepare by putting away their hoses and getting out their rakes. Typically, pests and insects are last on the list when it comes to getting ready for cooler weather. While we wait for spring, insects like mites start to hideout so they can get a head start on our trees and shrubs come Spring.

What are Cool Season Mites (Spider Mites)?

Cool season mites, or Spider Mites, are similar to common house spiders. They are small in size and have eight legs. These mites tend to affect Evergreens such as Azaleas, Hollies, Yews and more. When eating away at your trees you will notice a visual change, mostly seen as the color fading.

How to tell if your shrubs/ trees have been affected by Spider Mites:

  • Apparent “stippling” or small dotting on your plants leaves
  • Yellowing in certain areas of the plant
  • Tiny webs under the leaves with little white dots throughout

If you notice any of these symptoms, call us so we can help identify the cause and provide a solution!

What can we do about them?

Using an organic treatment plan, our arborists can aid your trees and shrubs by controlling these mites before they have the chance to cause significant damage. If you’re worried these mites might go undetected, you can sign up for our Canopy Protection Program . That way when our environmental specialists are on site servicing your property, they can detect and propose further treatment, ensuring that nothing detrimental can enter the scene causing further harm.
