Biostimulants: The Multivitamins Your Trees and Shrubs Need

Resources: Tree Maintenance

What comes to your mind when you think of the word “multivitamin”? Do you wonder if it works? What benefits it has? If it’s good for you?

Biostimulants are like multivitamins for plants, but with guaranteed results. They leave your landscape flourishing, both internally and aesthetically. In fact, our Certified Arborists like to say, if you can only apply one thing to your trees and shrubs, it should be biostimulants. (This is especially true if your trees or shrubs are freshly trimmed!)

Why do they say this? Continue reading to find out.

What is a Biostimulant?

Biostimulants can be thought of as all-natural plant growth supplements. Just like multivitamins, they are designed to support immune systems and foster development. Altogether, this paves a way to optimal health.

Here’s how:

  • Biostimulants stimulate root growth. Nutrients become readily accessible which is especially valuable for areas with heavily compacted soil (such as your landscape).
  • Biostimulants improve your plants’ ability to fight off environmental stressors. This reduces the likelihood of disease or infestation that may be caused by extreme stressors.
  • Biostimulants provide better recovery from disease and insect damage. Plants become more adept at fighting off the disease or infestation before it gets worse.
  • Biostimulants are cost-effective. They efficiently save you cost and time you would otherwise waste on extra water and fertilizer treatments.

Biostimulant vs Fertilizer: What’s the difference?

As biostimulants and fertilizers both nourish plant growth, it’s easy to wonder what the difference is between the two treatments.

Below are a few key differences.

FertilizerBiostimulant
Improves tolerance against a range of stressors (depending on type of fertilizer)Improves tolerance against extreme weather
Introduces nutrients to soilUses and enhances nutrients already in soil
Synthetic-basedOrganic form
Introduces chemicals that damage soil compositionDoes not introduce chemicals; instead, provides a workaround for soil compaction
Works faster, but by sacrificing natural soil structureWorks slower as it follows natural processes without altering soil structure

Our Favorite Part? They’re Organic!

As a reminder, biostimulants are entirely organic. While they do no harm, they do a whole lot of good.

Biostimulants contain a natural blend of:

  • Sugars
  • Bacteria
  • Humic acid
  • Sea kelp extract
  • Fungi

These nutrients are injected into the Critical Root Zone (CRZ) to stimulate plant growth. Like a straw, roots naturally absorb the nutrients through the soil, feeding and nourishing the tree or shrub through its development. The treatment enables urban landscapes to bypass challenges they would otherwise have to face from having heavily compacted soil.

>>> ICYMI: Soil compaction is the biggest silent killer in your yard.

When Should Biostimulants Be Applied?

When is a good time to have biostimulants applied? Right now.

While it’s easy to mistake winter as merely being dormant season, there is a key component to remember: below ground, roots are still growing and absorbing nutrients. They’re constantly working to thrive in the upcoming season.

But guess what? You can help them through the process!

We recommend biostimulant applications twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. By starting biostimulant treatment now, you can soon watch your landscape flourish.
