Bleeding Cankers On Beech, Maples, and Oaks!

Resources: Tree Problems

Bleeding Cankers On Beech Tree
Bleeding Cankers On Beech Tree

Are you starting seeing wet looking, oozing areas on the trunk of your ornamental and shade trees? If so what you are seeing is most likely an infection in the bark of your tree by various species of Phytophthora, commonly called Bleeding Cankers. These cankers impact the vascular system of the tree, inhibiting important energy transfers ultimately leading to defoliation, increased stress, insect infestations, and the death of the tree in bad cases.

Highly Susceptible Species In Our Area:
  • Beech
  • Maple
  • Oak

Although these species tend to attract the micro-organism Phytophthora, all ornamental and shade trees are at risk of contracting the infection.Mature trees also have a high rate of infection.

Signs & Symptoms:
  • Reddish-brown fluid oozing from crack in the bark.
  • Above the infected area, foliage may be pale and sparse and branch dieback may start to occur.
  • A strong alcohol, fermenting smell that attracts insects to the infected areas of the tree.
Treatment:

There are a number of measures that can be taken to suppress Phytophthora. A Certified Arborist will be able to prepare a program to suppress the micro-organism, increase the tree’s health, and prevent a repeat infection next year.

Canopy Protection Members, you can rest assured our Arborists and technicians will spot any bleeding canker problems during routine inspections. If you are noticing any of these symptoms mentioned above feel free to reach out to us so we can adjust your inspection schedule if necessary.
